Regent's Shahed arrested again

Mohammad Shahed, the controversial chairman of Regent Hospital, has been arrested again in a case filed with Pallabi Police Station in the capital.

He was arrested from the ECB Square area in Dhaka on Monday (July 20) by Cantonment Police Station personnel .

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Estate, Development and ICT) Mohammad Osman Gani confirmed the matter. He said Mohammad Shahed was arrested on the basis of a warrant issued in a case with Pallabi Police Station . He was later handed over to the concerned police station .

Mohammad Shahed, chairman of Regent Group and Regent Hospital, came into the limelight in 2020 for various irregularities, including forgery in COVID-19 testing .

On July 6, 2020, a mobile court led by RAB's Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam conducted raids at the Uttara and Mirpur offices of Regent Hospital. During the raid, evidence was found of fraud and extortion from the public by issuing COVID-19 certificates without actually conducting tests. The following day, on July 7, RAB sealed Regent Hospital and its head office on the orders of the Directorate General of Health Services . A case was filed against Shahed and 17 others at Uttara West Police Station that same day .

Later, on July 15, 2020, RAB arrested him from Satkhira's Debhata while he was trying to flee to India . He spent a long period in jail in various cases.

On September 4, 2024, he was released on bail from Dhaka Central Jail. A total of 96 cases were filed against him. He was a convicted accused in five cases and was released as he secured bail in all of them .

According to court sources, in one of the cases, Shahed was sentenced to life imprisonment on September 19, 2020, for possessing an illegal pistol, but the High Court later acquitted him of the arms charge on November 11, 2025.
