The newly renovated main building and courtroom of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) will be inaugurated on Tuesday next.

Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed will inaugurate the building.

The tribunal's Chief Prosecutor Md Tajul Islam confirmed this information to Views Bangladesh on Sunday (January 5).

He said, “The International Crimes Tribunal has been newly decorated for the trial of the July-August genocide. After the inauguration, the trial of the unprecedented genocide and crimes against humanity committed in July and August of 2024 will continue in this building.”

The old High Court building, which was inaugurated as the Governor's House in 1905, has been used as the Dhaka High Court since the Pakistan period and as the International Crimes Tribunal since 2010. The trial was being held there for crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War. However, the tribunal was moved from the century-old building due to the risk of the trial.

A tin shed was built next to the old building and the tribunal and prosecution were moved there. Since then, the tribunal's trial has been going on in the new tin shed building. After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, it was decided to hold the July-August genocide trial at the International Crimes Tribunal. Later, the interim government decided to renovate the old building to bring the infrastructure of the tribunal to international standards. The renovation work began in full swing from the second week of October.
