Election Commission (EC) has announced that a re-poll in Sherpur-3 and a by-election in Bogura-6 will be held before April 14 and preparations are underway to complete the electoral process in both constituencies within the stipulated timeframe.

In the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election, Tarique Rahman was elected from Bogura-6. He also secured victory in Dhaka-17.

Under constitutional provisions and electoral laws, a candidate elected from more than one constituency must retain one seat and vacate the other. Accordingly, he vacated the Bogura-6 seat, which was subsequently declared vacant, prompting the EC to initiate steps for a by-election.

Meanwhile, the Commission suspended polling in Sherpur-3 on February 4 following the death of Jamaat-nominated candidate Nuruzzaman Badal on February 3.

Under Article 17(1) of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, if a validly nominated candidate dies after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations but before polling, the election in the concerned constituency must be immediately cancelled or suspended. The deceased must have been recognised as a valid candidate by the Commission.

Upon confirmation of the death, the returning officer issues a public notice suspending the election, and the Commission later announces a fresh schedule.

In line with this provision, the Sherpur-3 election was postponed, and the EC is now set to announce a new timetable for the re-poll.
