The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has clarified that rickshaw puller Md. Azizur Rahman, who was arrested following a mob beating near Dhanmondi 32 on August 15, has not been charged in any attempted murder case.

In an official statement issued on Sunday, DMP’s Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said that Azizur was produced in court in connection with a regular case filed under the Penal Code — not for attempted murder, as has been widely claimed on social media and by some news outlets.

“Misinformation is being unnecessarily circulated regarding Azizur Rahman’s arrest and the nature of the charges against him,” the DMP said. “In reality, he is a suspect in a regular case, but many are portraying it as an attempted murder case, which is entirely false and misleading.”

The DMP urged all parties to refrain from spreading confusion and to verify facts before sharing information publicly.

However, on Saturday, Azizur’s lawyer, Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, stated that her client had been sent to jail in connection with an attempted murder case dating back to a political incident in July of the previous year.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jahan Jennifer issued the remand order following a court hearing.

Earlier, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Touhidur Rahman of Dhanmondi Police Station, the investigating officer, had sought Azizur’s detention in jail, while the defense filed a bail application.

The conflicting claims have added to public confusion, with legal proceedings now expected to clarify the charges in detail.
