Rickshaw puller who came to pay tribute to Bangabandhu sent to jail in attempted murder case

A court has sent rickshaw puller Azizur Rahman, who was beaten up and subjected to mob violence after coming to pay homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at his house at Dhanmondi No. 32 in the capital, to jail in an attempted murder case related to the July Movement.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ishrat Jennifer Jerin delivered the order on Saturday.

According to the case statement, during the July Movement on August 4 last year, the victim, Md. Ariful Islam, was leading a procession from New Market under Dhanmondi police station to the Science Lab area. On the day of the incident, at 2:30 pm, the accused fired bullets, petrol bombs and hand grenades. The bullets entered the victim's back and he immediately fell down. Later, he recovered after two months of treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. In this incident, the victim Ariful filed an attempt to murder case with the capital's Dhanmondi police station on April 2 this year.

On Friday, rickshaw puller Azizur Rahman was beaten up by a mob while placing flowers at Dhanmondi 32 no road in the capital. Later, the police detained him from there.

On that day, rickshaw puller Azizur Rahman said: "I do not belong to any party. I only love Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. That is why I came."

He also said: "I did not come to bring back the Awami League or Sheikh Hasina. I love Bangabandhu. That is why I brought flowers bought with my halal money."
