A Dhaka court has granted bail to rickshaw-puller Azizur Rahman, who was detained while placing flowers at the residence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 on National Mourning Day.

On Sunday, Metropolitan Magistrate M.A. Azharul Islam granted bail after a hearing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Rahman had been sent to jail the previous day in connection with an attempted murder case filed under the “July Movement” incidents. The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Touhidur Rahman of Dhanmondi Police Station, claimed that evidence from witnesses linked Azizur to the case. The police requested his remand, stating his detention was necessary for the sake of the investigation.  Following the arrest of Azizur Rahman, the case filed against him sparked a wave of criticism on social media."

According to the police, Azizur sustained minor injuries during a scuffle with bystanders when he was apprehended at Dhanmondi 32.

Following a bail petition by the defense, Azizur was presented in court today, and after the hearing, the magistrate granted his release on bail.

Azizur was detained on August 15 while attempting to pay tribute by placing flowers at the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was reportedly beaten by a mob and later handed over to the police.

The case against him stems from an incident on August 4 last year, during the July Movement. The complainant, Md. Ariful Islam, alleged that he was attacked with firearms, petrol bombs, and hand bombs while leading a procession from New Market to Science Lab in the capital. Ariful was seriously injured by a gunshot and required two months of treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

He filed an attempted murder case with Dhanmondi Police Station on April 2 of this year.
