River levels rising, 7 districts at flood risk

Flood fears have emerged in seven districts across Rangpur and Sylhet divisions, as rising river waters may temporarily inundate low-lying areas along the rivers.

According to the forecast of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of the Water Development Board on Tuesday, August 4, the water level of the Kushiyara River is flowing above the danger level at the Fenchuganj station in Sylhet. Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur over the next three days in Sylhet, Mymensingh and Rangpur divisions and their adjacent upstream areas.

The water level of the Surma-Kushiyara river system in the north-eastern region remained stable over the past 24 hours and may rise over the next three days. In the next 72 hours, it may flow at the warning level in some parts of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts, and low-lying areas adjacent to the river may be temporarily inundated.

Over the past 24 hours, water levels in the Dharla and Dhudhkumar rivers of Rangpur division have risen, while the Teesta river water level has remained stable and may rise over the next three days. In the next 48 hours, the Teesta and Dhudhkumar rivers may flow above the danger level at some points.

Additionally, the Dharla river may flow at the warning level in some areas over the next 48 hours, which may cause temporary flooding in low-lying areas adjacent to these rivers in Lalmonirhat and Kurigram districts.

Water levels in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system have risen over the past 24 hours and may continue to rise over the next five days.

Water levels in the Someshwari, Bhugai and Kangsha rivers of Mymensingh division in the north-eastern region have risen over the past 24 hours.

Water levels in the Muhuri, Selonia and Feni rivers of Chattogram division in the eastern region have risen over the past 24 hours, while the Gomti river water level has decreased. Water levels in these rivers may rise over the next three days.
