Road accidents claim 9,111 lives in 2025: Passenger Welfare Association
At least 9,111 people killed in road accidents across Bangladesh in 2025, marking a 6.94 percent increase compared with the previous year, according to the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh (PWAB).
Presenting its annual report at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Sunday (January 4), the organisation said another 14,812 people were injured during the year. A total of 6,729 road accidents were recorded nationwide in 2025, it added.
The group also highlighted accidents on railways and waterways. According to its data, 513 railway accidents last year left 485 people dead and 145 injured, while waterway accidents claimed 158 lives.
Leaders of the association stressed the need for broader representation in key policy decisions, including road safety measures, fare regulation and the formation of a compensation fund for accident victims. They said transport workers alone should not be involved in such decisions, calling for the inclusion of passengers and victims’ representatives.
They also urged political parties to prioritise public transport safety and road accident prevention in their election manifestos ahead of the upcoming national polls.
