Rohingya refugees are increasingly becoming involved in drug smuggling, environmental degradation and other criminal activities, creating additional challenges for Bangladesh, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman said.

He also said the prolonged presence of a large Rohingya population was placing significant pressure on the country’s economy.

The army chief made the remarks while addressing the closing ceremony of the three-week Capstone Course at the National Defence College in Mirpur Cantonment on Thursday (August 20).

"Bangladesh is facing various challenges because of the presence of the Rohingya population," Waker-Uz-Zaman said, highlighting environmental damage and alleged involvement in drug trafficking and other criminal activities as particular concerns.

He said the Rohingya crisis was no longer confined to humanitarian and security considerations, as hosting a large population for an extended period was also creating considerable economic pressure on Bangladesh.

The army chief later handed certificates to the fellows who completed the Capstone Course.

A total of 37 participants from diverse professional backgrounds took part in this year’s programme, including senior military officers, academics, doctors, senior officials from public and private institutions, diplomats, journalists and corporate representatives.

The three-week course featured discussions and exchanges on major national and international issues, while also providing participants with opportunities to share professional experiences and perspectives. The closing session reviewed the course's activities, achievements and key experiences.
