Rumeen Farhana seeks parliamentary action over Amir Hamza’s misogynistic remarks
Independent MP Rumeen Farhana has urged the Speaker to take action against Jamaat-e-Islam MP Amir Hamza for his recent misogynistic comments targeting female lawmakers.
Speaking on a point of order in Thursday’s session, Farhana said, “According to a report in an English daily, I and two other female MPs were subjected to offensive remarks in Parliament. I request the Speaker to review the matter and ensure appropriate action.”
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed responded that media reports cannot be treated as a formal point of order, and the issue will remain outside official parliamentary proceedings.
The controversy stems from a viral video of Hamza’s speech at a religious gathering, in which he made derogatory comments about MPs Rumeen Farhana and Farzana Sharmin Putul.
The remarks have drawn widespread public criticism, with citizens demanding accountability, noting that such language from a lawmaker is unacceptable and disrespectful toward women.
Hamza has previously faced backlash for similar comments, yet incidents continue to occur.
