Rumeen Farhana voices concern over worsening law and order in parliament
Independent MP Rumeen Farhana has expressed extreme anger and dissatisfaction over the severe deterioration of the country's law and order situation. Speaking in parliament on Monday, June 8, under Rule 71, she highlighted alarming figures of murder, kidnapping and violence against women during the government's first 100 days.
Citing statistics from a TIB report, Farhana claimed that crime rates have skyrocketed during the government's first 100 days. In March and April alone, 605 murders, 294 snatchings, 90 robberies and 196 kidnappings occurred. There were also 129 attacks on police and 2,214 thefts.
Presenting a grim picture of women and children's safety, she said 3,496 incidents of violence against women and children were recorded during the period. Among these, 78 to 102 were rape cases, 30 to 36 were gang-rapes, and 49 to 71 child rapes.
Farhana said 50 per cent of the government's success or failure will depend on the economy and law and order, with the remaining 50 per cent depending on other ministries. She remarked that if the home minister were present in parliament, she could have highlighted this record of failure more clearly.
