Shadik Kayem on verge of victory in DUCSU VP post

In the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Daksu) election, Abu Shadik Kayem of Chhatra Shibir is on the way to a sweeping victory in the Vice-President (VP) post. However, he has not yet been officially declared elected. Based on results from the declared centres, Shadik Kayem is leading by more than double the margin over his nearest rival.

Meanwhile, SM Farhad of Chhatra Shibir for the GS post and Mohiuddin Khan for the AGS post are also on the way to victory.

According to the final results of all centres at 7am today (10 September), Shadik Kayem received 14,042 votes. His closest rival, Abidul Islam Khan of Chhatra Dal, received 5,658 votes.

In addition, independent alliance candidate Umama Fatema received the third-highest 2,549 votes. Independent candidate Shamim Hossain received 2,385 votes.

From the Anti-Discrimination Students’ Union panel, Abdul Quader received 668 votes and from the Resistance Council, Sheikh Tasnim Afroze Imi received 11 votes.

Already Abidul and Umama Fatema have rejected the election results. Abdul Quader has also strongly criticised the election, alleging widespread rigging.

Earlier, voting for DUCSU took place from 8 am to 4 pm yesterday. This time, voting for DUCSU and hall unions was held in 810 booths across eight centres on the university campus. The total number of voters this time was 39,874. Out of this, 18,959 were from five female halls, while 20,915 were from 13 male halls.

For DUCSU’s 28 posts, a total of 471 candidates contested. In 18 halls, with 13 posts each, the total number of posts was 234. For these posts, 1,035 candidates entered the race. In total, each voter had to cast 41 votes this time.
