Sagar–Runi murder case probe report delayed for 126th time
The submission of the investigation report in the high-profile murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi has been postponed once again, marking the 126th delay in the long-running case.
The investigation report, which was scheduled for submission on Thursday (May 7), has been further deferred, with the court setting June 18 as the new date after investigation officer Md. Azizul Haque, Additional Superintendent of Police of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), failed to file it, prosecutors confirmed.
The order was issued by Judge Ariful Islam today, according to Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam Russell of the prosecution division.
The case relates to the brutal killing of Sagar Sarowar, news editor of Maasranga Television, and Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, at their residence in Dhaka on February 11, 2012.
The victim’s brother, Nawsher Alam Roman, filed the murder case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Over the years, the investigation has been transferred multiple times—from local police to the Detective Branch, and later to the Rapid Action Battalion—without reaching a conclusion.
In September last year, the High Court directed the formation of a high-powered task force comprising experienced officers from different agencies and ordered completion of the investigation within six months while removing RAB from the probe.
Following the directive, the Ministry of Home Affairs formed a four-member task force led by the chief of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
Several accused individuals are currently either in custody or on bail, while one accused remains absconding, according to case records.
