Sagar–Runi murder case: Report submission deadline postponed by another 6 months

The High Court (HC) has once again extended by six months the deadline for submission of the investigation report in the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, as the high-level task force formed to probe the case failed to complete its work within the stipulated time.

A bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice A F M Saiful Karim passed the order on Sunday (April 26).

During the hearing, the state sought additional time, stating that the investigation is at its final stage but requires more time for completion. The petitioners’ lawyers, however, argued for a shorter extension of three months.

The case, filed in 2012, has seen repeated delays in investigation despite multiple directives from the High Court. In 2024, a four-member high-level task force led by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) chief was formed to reinvestigate the case, replacing RAB from the probe team as per court order.

The journalist couple was brutally killed on February 11, 2012, at their residence in the West Rajabazar area of Dhaka. Their son was present at the home during the incident.
