Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP local committee, has been given the responsibility of the Home Ministry. He was elected from Cox's Bazar-1 (Chakaria-Pekua) Parliamentary constituency.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which won a single majority, has formed the government five days after the 13th National Parliament elections.

The oath-taking of the new cabinet members was held at 4 pm on Tuesday (February 17) at the South Plaza of the National Assembly Building. According to the constitution, the cabinet members were administered the oath by the President.

Earlier, Salahuddin served as the State Minister for Communications during the BNP government from 2001-2006.

Salahuddin Ahmed has a bachelor's (honors) and master's degree in economics from Dhaka University. Before joining politics, he was an officer in the BCS (Administration) cadre.

He served as the APS (Assistant Private Secretary) to the then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in 1991. Later, he left the government service and joined politics. He was elected as a member of the party's standing committee in the sixth council of the BNP.

Salahuddin went missing from the city's Uttara area on March 10, 2015. He was spotted in Indian state of Meghalaya's hill station Shillong on May 11, 2015. Indian police after rescuing the BNP leader had said he was found wandering on the streets of the town.

Meghalaya police filed a case against him under the Foreigners Act as he did not show any valid documents during his rescue. An Indian court indicted Salahuddin on July 22, 2015 and he was released in 2018.

The BNP leader, however, had to remain in India till August 11, 2024, as he did not receive approval from Indian authorities to make his journey.

Later, he returned home after the Sheikh Hasina led government fell in August, 2024.
