SC to deliver verdict on caretaker government appeal on Nov 20
The Appellate Division of Bangladesh’s Supreme Court has concluded hearings on the appeal seeking the reinstatement of the caretaker government system during national elections. The bench will deliver its verdict on November 20.
A seven-member bench, led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed, set the date this morning (November 11).
During the hearings, Attorney General argued that the previous ruling, which declared the 13th constitutional amendment unconstitutional, should not be upheld, asserting that the then Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque had committed a punishable offense.
The appeal was filed following the Supreme Court’s August 27 decision to hear a review petition challenging the 2011 verdict that abolished the caretaker government system.
Five individuals, including Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Golam Porwar, are petitioners.
The 2011 ruling, delivered by a bench led by the then Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque, had scrapped the caretaker government system by majority decision.
