A scuffle and heated altercation broke out between activists of Jatiya Party and Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, a student organisation affiliated with the National Citizen Party (NCP), before paying tributes at the National Memorial on the occasion of the Great Independence and National Day.

Shamim Haider Patwari was present from Jatiya Party, while Ahsan Labib represented Chhatra Shakti. At least one Jatiya Party leader was injured in the incident.

Jatiya Party claimed that they were standing in line with banners and flowers to pay respects to the martyrs of the Liberation War when another group carried out a pre-planned attack on them. However, the party's leaders claimed their activists 'resisted politely'.

On the other hand, Chhatra Shakti alleged that tension erupted when they responded with counter-slogans after Jatiya Party raised slogans. According to them, the situation deteriorated further when a Jatiya Party leader attacked a Chhatra Shakti leader. Subsequently, Chhatra Shakti activists tore down Jatiya Party's banners.

In response to the incident, Shamim Haider Patwari said although the identities of the attackers could not be confirmed, he suspected that an anti-independence group might be behind the incident. He further stated that Jatiya Party would continue politics with the spirit of independence in the future.

Ahsan Labib, meanwhile, said the tension began with slogans from Jatiya Party, and the reaction came in response to an attack on their leader.

The incident created concern and tension among those present on such an important state occasion as Independence Day.
