Security tightened in Dhaka, highways ahead of Eid, 568 arrested in 11 days
In view of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, law enforcement agencies have beefed up security in the capital and highways. Special surveillance has been increased by identifying professional robbers and snatchers, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police Intelligence Division (DB) Chief Additional Commissioner DIG Md. Shafiqul Islam.
He gave this information at a press conference held after arresting five robbers and three snatchers in the capital on Tuesday (May 12).
The DB chief said that a total of 568 people, including 154 extortionists and 261 snatchers, were arrested in a special operation in the first 11 days of this month.
The Intelligence Police said that surveillance has been increased at the entrances, highways and important areas of the capital, focusing on Eid. In addition to regular patrols, the movements of inter-district criminal gangs are also being monitored.
The press conference also highlighted the arrest of five members of an inter-district gang of robbers. The DB claimed that illegal weapons, bullets, gunpowder, hand grenades and motorcycles were recovered from them.
At the time, DB chief Shafiqul Islam said that the accused in the discussed Titon murder case are also under intelligence surveillance and they will be arrested soon.
