Separate ordinance on enforced disappearance was unnecessary: Chief Prosecutor
International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam has said enacting a separate ordinance on enforced disappearance was unnecessary, as such crimes can be tried under the existing tribunal law.
He made the remark while responding to questions from journalists at a press conference at his office on Tuesday, April 7.
The chief prosecutor said the tribunal already had jurisdiction to try crimes like enforced disappearance under the existing law. Therefore, there was no need for a new separate law or tribunal on this matter.
He further said if the enforced disappearance ordinance has been repealed and integrated into the tribunal law, that would be a positive decision. It is a correct and appropriate step.
Aminul Islam said trials of enforced disappearance can be effectively conducted under the tribunal law.
