Shahabuddin leaves Bangabhaban for Gulshan residence

Bangladesh's 22nd President Mohammed Shahabuddin left the official presidential residence, Bangabhaban, two days after resigning from office. On Sunday (July 26), he departed Bangabhaban with his family at 2:25pm for his personal residence 'Green Villa' in the capital's Gulshan.

Shahabuddin resigned from the presidency on Friday (July 24) afternoon, citing health reasons. Although elected for a five-year term under the constitution, he served as president for approximately three years and three months. During his tenure, he carried out various constitutional duties and participated in important state programmes. His formal responsibilities as president ended with his resignation, and his chapter at the official presidential residence concluded on Sunday as he left Bangabhaban.

It has been learned that arrangements have been made for the former president on the fifth floor of 'Green Villa' at 123 Road in Gulshan-1. Necessary preparations, including the deployment of security personnel and new telephone connections from BTCL, were completed before he left Bangabhaban. Officials from Bangabhaban were also involved in the process of transferring his personal belongings to the new residence.

Incidentally, Mohammed Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023. Following his resignation on July 24, 2026, a notification was issued assigning Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed as the acting president. Since then, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has been carrying out official duties and participating in various state programmes, including paying tributes at the National Memorial.

The government has already stated that as a former president, Mohammed Shahabuddin will receive all benefits and privileges as per the law. A six-month provision for the Special Security Force (SSF) and President's Guard Regiment (PGR) is in effect for his security. Additionally, his overall security will be ensured through police and other security agencies.
