Shahjalal Airport declared 'silent zone'
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital has been officially declared a 'silent zone'. The authorities have said strict measures will be taken to control noise pollution in the airport area following this declaration.
DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan announced the information at a noise awareness rally organised at the Gulshan-2 roundabout on the occasion of World Environment Day on Friday, June 5.
From now on, legal action will be taken against unnecessary honking and other noise-polluting activities in the airport area. Authorities will take strict action against violators in accordance with government policies, he said.
The DNCC administrator also informed that Gulshan, Banani, Niketan and Baridhara areas have already been declared silent zones. Various activities are being carried out with the cooperation of local societies to control noise and air pollution in these areas.
Director General of the Department of Environment Dr Md Lutfar Rahman said awareness campaigns are being conducted through signboards on roads, media campaigns and social media activities to control noise pollution.
Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Md Anisur Rahman said drives to control noise pollution in the capital have been intensified since traffic police were given authority under the Noise Pollution Control Rules 2025.
In response to a question from journalists, the DNCC administrator said AI technology-based signal control activities are being successfully implemented in the capital's traffic management and will continue in the future.
