Dr. Mohammad Abdul Momen, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman, has said that it is difficult for the ACC to verify asset information submitted by candidates in election affidavits within a short period. He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the 22nd anniversary programme of Reporters Against Corruption (RAC) in Dhaka on Sunday, January 11.

The ACC chairman said that although candidates submit their asset statements within a limited timeframe, completing a comprehensive investigation requires much more time. As a result, inconsistencies cannot be identified immediately. Describing corruption as one of Bangladesh’s major challenges, Mohammad Abdul Momen stressed that honest, competent, and accountable leadership is essential to overcome the situation.

He said that ensuring good governance and justice for all requires building a fair and accountable state, where only honest individuals are elected as public representatives.

Urging journalists and the general public to monitor the information submitted in candidates’ affidavits, the ACC chairman said that any suspicious or misleading details should be reported to the commission, which would make its investigations more effective.

He added that if there are questions about a candidate’s declared assets, they should inform the ACC. He encouraged people to conduct their own inquiries and assist the commission, stressing that those who conceal asset information in affidavits should not be entrusted with the responsibility of running the country.
