Shortcuts make wealthy lawyers, not good ones: Law Minister

Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has remarked that while it is possible to become a wealthy lawyer through shortcuts, there is no alternative to hard work, perseverance and regular study to become a good and skilled lawyer.

He said this while addressing law students of various universities at the 'Law Fest' held at North South University on Saturday, September 19.

The Law Minister said, "There are shortcuts to becoming a wealthy lawyer, and that is fixing and foxing. But there is no alternative to study to become a truly good lawyer."

Describing lawyers as "social engineers" of society, he said society is constantly undergoing change. Lawyers play a role in guiding society in the right direction through legal guidance. Therefore, their every statement and choice of words in court is extremely important.

Comparing the legal profession with the medical profession, the minister said a doctor relies more on his own decisions in treating a patient. But a lawyer must present law and information and evidence properly in court, taking into consideration the statements of the judge, the opposing side, the client and all concerned.

Recalling the early days of his own career, he said many lawyers have to work for a long time without remuneration at the start of their careers. However, with a combination of study, experience and skill, one can eventually reach a position where the lawyer's presence itself becomes the basis of success.

Calling on students to stay on the path of ethics, the Law Minister said a lawyer is not just a client's protector; he is also a responsible officer of the court. At the same time, calling for the participation of the youth in legal reform, he said if any law needs correction or change, students can send proposals and drafts to the Ministry of Law.
