Shyampur businessman shooting case: Manjurul placed on 2-day remand

A court has granted a two-day remand for Manjurul Islam, an accused in the case of shooting businessman Aslam Khan at a crockery shop in Dhaka's Shyampur area. Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam passed the order after a hearing on Tuesday, September 8, confirmed SI Abdus Sabur of the prosecution.

Earlier, on Saturday night at around 8:15pm, businessman Aslam Khan was shot inside a crockery shop in the South Dania-Shyampur area of Kadamtali Police Station. Following the incident, Manjurul Islam was detained with the help of locals. Police claimed to have recovered two pistols, nine rounds of bullets and a bullet shell from him.

Aslam was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Police said two people on a motorcycle fired at him and tried to flee.

SI Ashok Kumar Sarkar of Kadamtali Police Station filed a case under the Arms Act in connection with the incident. Manjurul was shown arrested and sent to jail on Sunday.

Later, the investigating officer, SI Mithun Mondal of Kadamtali Police Station, applied to the court seeking a five-day remand for Manjurul. The hearing was fixed for Tuesday.

When Manjurul was produced in court, a bandage was seen on his head. The investigating officer presented arguments in favour of the remand, but the accused had no lawyer present.

The judge asked Manjurul if he had anything to say, and he spoke about the incident himself.

Manjurul said he and Jasim live in the Mahakhali area. He claimed he had a previous dispute with Jasim over a motorcycle, and his motorcycle was taken by Jasim. He alleged that a conflict arose between them over a demand of Tk 70,000 for the motorcycle.

In court, Manjurul claimed that he did not shoot Aslam Khan and that Jasim had actually fired the shot. He also described Jasim as "the right hand of Kala Mir."

Proclaiming his innocence, Manjurul said he was brought to the scene from Mahakhali in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw after being forced to go by showing him pictures of his wife and daughter. He claimed Jasim had threatened him, saying that if he did not accompany him, his wife and daughter would be harmed or killed.

Manjurul further said, "I did not shoot. Jasim shot me. They found nothing with me. They showed me pictures of my wife and daughter, held me hostage and brought me here."

Pleading not to be remanded, he said his physical condition was poor. He said he felt dizzy and could not stand. He feared he might die if taken on remand.

"My condition is very bad. If you want to give remand, give it after a few days. I will tell the truth. If I am remanded now, I might even die. My head is not working," Manjurul said.

He added, "If I had not listened to them, they would have killed my wife and daughter. They have no one else but me. I will do as you (the judge) say. I will die in two to three days. I am under mental pressure. Please do not give remand."

After hearing both sides, the court granted a two-day remand for Manjurul Islam.
