Six parliament members did not vote in Bangladesh’s 23rd presidential election. Parliament secretariat sources said three from BNP, one from Jamaat, one from Khelafat Majlis and one independent parliament member are among those who did not vote.

Voting for the presidential election was held in the session hall of the National Parliament Building on Thursday (August 20). Parliament members elected the president by direct voting at that time.

The three BNP parliament members who did not vote are Mirza Abbas, Osman Faruk and Mostafa Kamal Pasha. Besides expelled Jamaat parliament member Gazi Nazrul Islam, Khelafat Majlis’s Abul Hasan and independent parliament member Rumeen Farhana did not vote.

Parliament secretariat sources said BNP parliament member Mirza Abbas had written a letter to the speaker informing that he would not be able to vote as he is abroad for treatment. As a result he was not present during the voting. However the reasons for the other five parliament members not voting were not informed immediately.

BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected as Bangladesh’s 23rd president with 255 votes in the election. His rival candidate supported by the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed got 88 votes.
