Speaker Hafiz Uddin leaves for Tehran to attend Khamenei's funeral
Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmed left Dhaka for Tehran on Thursday morning (July 2) to attend the funeral and burial ceremonies of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Speaker departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 7:30am on a special flight to the Iranian capital, where he will represent Bangladesh at the state funeral.
The visit is part of Bangladesh's official expression of condolence and solidarity following the death of Iran's highest political and religious authority. After attending the funeral and related state ceremonies, the Speaker is scheduled to return to Dhaka on July 4.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei died on February 28, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on April 19, 1939, in Mashhad, northeastern Iran, he was one of the most influential figures in the country's modern history.
Following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Khamenei played a central role in shaping Iran's political and state institutions. He briefly served as Iran's defence minister in 1980 before assuming key responsibilities during the Iran-Iraq War, overseeing the Islamic Revolutionary forces. He later served as Iran's president before becoming the country's Supreme Leader.
Khamenei's death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from leaders across the world, with dignitaries expected to attend the funeral in Tehran.
