Speaker Hafiz Uddin represents Bangladesh at Khamenei's state funeral
Speaker of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmad (Bir Bikram), has paid tribute on behalf of Bangladesh at the state funeral of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran.
The Speaker attended the state funeral at Tehran's Grand Mosalla on Friday, where he offered prayers for Khamenei's departed soul and signed the official condolence book on behalf of the government and people of Bangladesh.
The Speaker conveyed Bangladesh's deepest sympathies to the people of Iran and extended condolences to the bereaved nation, according to a statement issued by the Parliament Secretariat on Saturday (July 4).
During the visit, he also held courtesy meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and several senior Iranian officials.
Earlier, Bangladesh strongly condemned the killing of Khamenei in attacks attributed to the United States and Israel. In a separate statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed expressed profound grief over Khamenei's death and denounced what he described as a "brutal assassination."
Iran began official state funeral ceremonies for Khamenei on Friday. According to Iranian authorities, he was killed at his residence on February 28, the first day of the conflict triggered by attacks involving the United States and Israel.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin arrived in Tehran on Thursday to attend the funeral and was received at the airport by Iranian Deputy Speaker Hamid Reza Haji Babaei.
As part of his visit, the Speaker also met Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Iran's Islamic Consultative Assembly. The two sides discussed bilateral relations, parliamentary cooperation and ways to further strengthen ties between Bangladesh and Iran.
The Parliament Secretariat added that the Speaker highlighted the centuries-old friendship between the two countries, underscoring their deep cultural ties and longstanding people-to-people connections.
