Speaker Hafiz Uddin returns home after cutting short Thailand visit

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed returned to Dhaka on Friday (July 24), cutting short his official visit to Thailand, as speculation continues over the possible resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

According to a statement issued by the Parliament Secretariat's Public Relations Wing-1, the Speaker's flight landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 12:15pm. He had travelled to Bangkok on July 19 on an official visit but returned ahead of schedule.

The Speaker's return comes amid heightened political discussions over reports that the President could resign as early as Friday or Saturday.

Several sources familiar with the matter claim the President may cite health complications as the reason for stepping down before seeking medical treatment abroad.

Under the Constitution of Bangladesh, the President must submit a resignation letter to the Speaker of Parliament. If the office of the President becomes vacant, the Speaker assumes the role of Acting President until a new Head of State is elected.

Despite the speculation, no official confirmation has been issued regarding the President's resignation.

On Thursday, Home Adviser Salahuddin Ahmed said the government had not initiated any process regarding the President's resignation, adding that while the President has the constitutional authority to resign, the government has no information indicating such a move.

Meanwhile, a source at Bangabhaban said the President has not yet signed any resignation letter. Presidential Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam also stated that any decision to resign would be announced officially.

The Constitution requires that a new President be elected within 90 days if the office falls vacant. Until then, the Speaker will discharge the responsibilities of the Presidency in an acting capacity.
