Speaker warns MPs over use of mobile phones in parliament
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has warned all members of the National Parliament over the incident of a member of parliament using his mobile phone in the session hall during a session. He said in the ruling, "Please do not use your phone in parliament; this is against the rules and this instruction applies to everyone. This is the expectation to uphold the dignity of the parliament."
The incident occurred during the discussion on the proposal to send the 'Public Examinations Offences Amendment Bill, 2026' to the Public Opinion Scrutiny and Selection Committee in the National Assembly on Tuesday.
At one stage of the discussion, the Speaker, seeing a member of parliament using his mobile phone in public, said to him, "Honorable Member of Parliament AKM Mosharraf Hossain, some people use their telephones in parliament under a cover. You are using it openly." Later, the Speaker requested that the phone not be used during the session.
The Speaker then called on Mohammad Abdul Alim, MP from Bagerhat-4 constituency, to speak as the next speaker. On that day, several MPs spoke on the proposal to send the bill to the Public Opinion Verification and Selection Committee. Later, the proposals were rejected by voice vote and the bill was passed.
However, there is no MP named 'AKM Mosharraf' in the current parliament. There are three members named Mosharraf in the parliament - BNP Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, former Chhatra Dal vice-president ABM Mosharraf Hossain from Patuakhali-4 constituency, and Mosharraf Hossain from Bogura-4 constituency. All three are BNP MPs.
It was learned from talking to several MPs who participated in the parliament meeting that the Speaker made the comment targeting Mosharraf Hossain from Bogura-4 constituency.
