Special security measures in place at Bangabhaban
Full-proofsecurity measures in place around Bangabhaban as agitated protesters are staging demonstration seeking removal of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
Along with the deployment of a large number of policemen, the army's APCs and water cannons have been kept ready. Two platoons of BGB members have also been deployed.
Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, a group of over 50 angry people under the banner of Independence-Sovereignty Protection Committee took position in front of Bangabhaban demanding the removal of the president. A few moment later, another group of around 50 more people under the banner of 'Raktim July-2024' joined them. They chanted various slogans demanding the resignation of the president.
At one stage, near about 50 more agitated people joined the mob and attempted to enter inside Bangabhaban breaching the security barriers. Law enforcers fired sound grenades to disperse the protesters leaving at least five of them injured.
In face of strict resistance, the angry demonstrators left spot early Wednesday.
However, the law enforcers are on alert and have created a massive security cordon around Bangabhaban.
A large number of APBN, BGB, police and army were seen deployed in armed positions in front of the main gate of Bangabgaban on Wednesday (October 23). APC and riot car along with water cannon have been kept ready there to face any untoward situation.
Although none of the angry protestors were seen on the street since early Wednesday, the authorities concerned have ensured strict security surrounding the place. Visiting the spot on Wednesday afternoon, increased presence of media personnel was also seen.
DMP's Media and Public Relations Department Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said, security has been strengthened in Bangabhaban area as per DMP's instructions.
Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md. Shahriar Ali said, security has been strengthened in Bangabhaban area today based on monitoring and assessment of the overall situation. An unexpected incident happened last night. The on-duty policemen came under violent attack which left several policemen injured. Two people, including a student, were also received injuries during the violence.
Colonel Mohammad Shariful Islam, Deputy Director General (Media) of BGB Headquarters said, two platoons of BGB members have been deployed in Bangabhaban area as per the demand of higher authorities to maintain law and order situation. They will cooperate with other forces.
It all began after Manab Zamin on Sunday published an exclusive interview of him saying that he only heard that Hasina had resigned, but there was no evidence of her resignation.
Security measures for the president
Special Security Forces: Specially trained security forces are assigned for the security of the president. In Bangladesh, the Special Security Force or SSF serves the president. They provides protection to the president. The SSF takes necessary measures in coordination with the civil administration and security and intelligence organizations to prevent future threats to the president. The SSF is also responsible for the security of his office and residence.
Armed Police and Military Units: Armed police and Army are deployed in certain areas during the movement of the president. These forces play an active role especially when the president participates in any public event or travels somewhere.
External Surveillance and Technological Security: Security cameras, drone surveillance and other modern technologies are used around the presidential residence and office. Entrants are also security checked using metal detectors and bomb scanning devices.
Secret Service and Intelligence Monitoring: Various intelligence agencies, such as the DGFI and National Security Intelligence (NSI), regularly monitor the movement of the president to ensure his security. They gather early information and take preventive measures in case of any threat against the president.
Special arrangements for transportation: Special vehicles are used for the President's transportation which are bulletproof and explosive resistant. These vehicles form part of the presidential convoy and are escorted by police motorcycle squads.
