Specialised 'Cyber Security Unit' to be formed for police: Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said a specialised 'Cyber Security Unit' will be formed for the police force. Initiatives have been taken to build the necessary infrastructure for this. At the same time, plans to establish digital forensic and cyber labs from the thana, district and divisional levels up to the central level are being implemented.

These matters were discussed at a courtesy meeting between Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and outgoing Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen at the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Secretariat on Monday, September 21. At the meeting, the two countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in curbing cybercrime, enhancing technological capacity in maintaining law and order, and security cooperation.

At the meeting, it was announced that a five-member high-level delegation of police would be sent to China to visit China's cyber labs and technological infrastructure and exchange experience. After visiting China's modern labs, the team will prepare specific proposals on installing necessary equipment and infrastructure in the country.

At the beginning of the meeting, Ambassador Yao Wen informed the Home Minister about the end of his tenure in Bangladesh at the beginning of October. At that time, he conveyed greetings to the Home Minister on behalf of China's Minister of Public Security and delivered an invitation to visit China.

The ambassador said that over the past two years, China has trained more than 100 members of Bangladesh's law enforcement agencies on various subjects, including cybercrime, public security, traffic management, immigration and UN peacekeeping missions.

The Home Minister expressed gratitude to China for this cooperation. He said that alongside forming a specialised cyber security unit for the police force, initiatives have been taken to establish digital forensic and cyber labs from the grassroots to the central level.

At the meeting, the ambassador called for ensuring the security of Chinese nationals, businessmen and investors working in Bangladesh. In response, the Home Minister said China is one of Bangladesh's main investors and strategic development partners. He said the government is committed to ensuring maximum security for Chinese nationals staying in Bangladesh and workers of various development projects.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir, Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Barrister Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain and Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Dr Ziauddin Ahmed, along with concerned officials, were present at the courtesy meeting.
