Squally weather with winds up to 60 km/h likely in Dhaka, coastal areas

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast squally weather with wind speeds of up to 60 km/h over Dhaka and several southern and coastal districts as the active monsoon continues to influence weather across the country.

In a warning issued on Friday (July 24), the Storm Warning Centre said Dhaka, Faridpur, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar and Sylhet may experience temporary gusty or squally winds accompanied by rain or thundershowers.

Additionally, river ports in these areas have been advised to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 1.

According to the BMD, winds from the south or southeast could reach speeds of 45–60 km/h during the weather disturbance.

The weather office said the monsoon trough extends from Rajasthan through Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and central Bangladesh to Assam, with one extension stretching into the northwestern Bay of Bengal. The monsoon remains active over southern Bangladesh and fairly active elsewhere.

The forecast predicts rain or thundershowers in many places across Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and at a few locations in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions. Some areas may experience moderately heavy to heavy rainfall.

Despite the rain, day and night temperatures are expected to rise slightly across the country.

In a separate forecast for the capital, the BMD said Dhaka may witness partly cloudy skies with rain or thunderstorms by midday. Light winds of 10–15 km/h are expected from the south or southeast. The city's temperature was recorded at 25.1°C at 6:00am on Friday.
