SRB gets first case for investigation

The Special Response Battalion (SRB) has received a case for investigation for the first time since its formation by abolishing the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The court has directed the SRB to investigate and submit a report in a case filed over allegations of house grabbing, assault and extortion in Mirpur, Dhaka.

Abul Hasan Kanon, nazir of the Dhaka CMM Court, confirmed the matter. On Sunday, Md Mizanur Rahman, alias Bachchu, filed an application in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam against three people. After the hearing, the court recorded the complainant's statement and directed the SRB to investigate the complaint and submit a report.

The accused in the case are Hemayet Uddin Sumon, Md Nazmul Hossain and Munni Akter Misti.

The court's order stated that the Special Response Battalion (SRB) has been given the power under Section 10(c) of the SRB Act to take action against drugs, cybercrime, land and land grabbing. Since the case is land-related, under Section 5(2) of the Act, the court can direct the Director General of SRB to investigate any criminal offence. Accordingly, the court noted that it is reasonable to have the complainant's petition investigated by the SRB.

The order further stated that under Section 15(2) of the SRB Act, the Director General has been directed to investigate and submit a report through any member of the unit not below the rank of Sub-Inspector.

The case complaint stated that Md Yunus Ali and Ruma Akter, owners of a multi-storey building built on land in Mirpur Housing Estate in Dhaka, live in Canada with their family. Their uncle, Mizanur Rahman, has been performing the responsibility of looking after and maintaining their immovable property in Bangladesh.

The complaint further stated that the accused, Hemayet Uddin Sumon, Md Nazmul Hossain and Munni Akter Misti, had long been trying to grab and misappropriate the building, taking advantage of the owners' absence. In continuation of this, on July 16, 2025, led by Hemayet, they forcibly entered the house and attempted to grab it. It was alleged that they threatened to kill when resisted.

The case also mentioned that at one point, Hemayet demanded Tk 50 lakh in extortion from the complainant, Mizanur Rahman. The complaint said that when the extortion money was refused, the accused entered the house, vandalised it and stole Tk 2 lakh.
