Stargazing event for kids held in capital's Dhupkhola
The Bangladesh Astronomical Association has organized a special event to inspire children’s interest in astronomy. On Sunday (February 16), from 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm, the 'Stargazing for Children' program was held at the Dhupkhola Basketball Ground in the capital.
The event was organized by East and Club, Gandaria Kisholoy Kochi-Kachar Mela, and The Grand Area.
The organizers said that children were shown the beauty of the night sky and constellations through a telescope. At the same time, they were introduced to the basics of astronomy and information about planets and stars.
Through the telescope, the planet Venus was clearly visible, but Saturn was not visible as it was close to the horizon. Jupiter was located overhead, and Mars was slightly to its east. The three planets—Venus, Jupiter, and Mars—could be easily observed through the telescope.
Moshurl Amin, the Chairman of the Bangladesh Astronomical Association, said, "To spark children’s interest in science, they need hands-on experience. This kind of event will increase their curiosity about space and encourage them to engage more with science."
Local residents and parents have welcomed the initiative. Many believe that such unique and educational events are very important for children amidst the busy urban life.
A guardian attending the event told Views Bangladesh, "Children these days are getting addicted to technology, so events like this help them gain real-life experience."
A student attending the event, Samir Islam, told Views Bangladesh, "I have wanted to learn about space for a long time. I have learned a lot here, and it feels great."
Another student, Imran Hasan, said, "I have been interested in space since childhood. Such initiatives will help inspire the new generation to get into research."
It’s worth mentioning that the Bangladesh Astronomical Association has been regularly conducting astronomy-related activities since 1988. They regularly organize observation workshops, seminars, and sky observations for students and the general public.
