State minister, Chinese ambassador hold meeting to strengthen Bangladesh-China relations

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam and Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka Yao Wen have discussed further strengthening bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China and increasing cooperation on issues of mutual interest.

They exchanged views on the ongoing relations between the two countries, various development projects and the prospects of future cooperation at a meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday (September 14).

Recalling the recent visit of the Bangladesh prime minister to China, Shama Obaid expressed gratitude to China. She also praised China’s long-standing cooperation in Bangladesh’s infrastructure development, human resource development and capacity building.

Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen described Bangladesh as a trusted friend and partner of China. At the same time, he highlighted the progress made in various fields of relations between the two countries in recent times.

The discussion focused on the Bangladesh-China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (BCMEC), Chinese economic zones, development of Mongla port, construction of a proposed 1,000-bed hospital in Rangpur, education and human resource development, increasing people-to-people contact and energy cooperation. Women’s empowerment was also discussed between the two sides.

In addition, Yao Wen invited the state minister for foreign affairs to lead a delegation of Bangladeshi women entrepreneurs on a visit to China. Shama Obaid welcomed the invitation and praised the initiative.
