State minister orders action against human trafficking ring over Mediterranean deaths
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has said the Bangladesh embassy in Greece is working to collect detailed information on the dead and survivors. She has also ordered that the human trafficking ring be identified and brought to justice.
At least 22 migrants have died after a boat capsized in the Mediterranean Sea while attempting to cross illegally from Libya to Greece. Among the dead, ten are reportedly from Sunamganj, Bangladesh, according to initial information.
The state minister said a syndicated human trafficking network is active in both Libya and Bangladesh, luring migrants with false promises and sending them through dangerous routes. While citizens of several countries were on board, the presence of Bangladeshis has been confirmed. A woman and a child were reportedly among the deceased.
Several survivors have been rescued and hospitalised, while others are being kept in a camp. The embassy is in constant communication to identify the survivors and assess their condition. However, collecting information and taking further steps will take time due to the rules and regulations of the concerned country.
The state minister described the incident as tragic and alarming. She said many migrants mistakenly believe they will reach their destination quickly. In reality, they often drift at sea for days, facing shortages of food and water, leading to inhuman conditions and deaths. In some cases, bodies are even thrown into the sea.
The government is focusing on identifying those involved in the incident and ensuring exemplary punishment under international and domestic laws. The Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare is also investigating the matter. The state minister emphasised the need for effective long-term measures to stop such human trafficking.
