Storms with winds up to 60 km/h likely in five districts, temp may ease

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast some relief from the ongoing heatwave on Thursday (September 17), while warning of rain and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of up to 60 km/h in five regions.

According to the BMD’s Storm Warning Centre forecast issued at 7am, temporary gusty or squally winds from the south or southeast, reaching 45–60 km/h, may sweep over Rangpur, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh and Sylhet regions.

Rain or thunderstorms are also likely in the areas, with local river ports advised to hoist Warning Signal No. 1.

The forecast comes after Jashore recorded the country’s highest temperature at 36.4°C on Wednesday. Dhaka recorded a maximum of 36°C.

The BMD said the mild heatwave affecting Dhaka, Faridpur, Rangpur, Jashore and Khulna districts may ease on Thursday. Temperatures have risen in recent days as the influence of the southwest monsoon weakened, reducing rainfall and increasing humid heat.

Rain is likely in many parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions on Thursday, while some areas of Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with temporary gusty winds. Isolated areas may receive moderately heavy rain.

In Dhaka, the sky remained cloudy in the morning, with rain or thunderstorms possible by 1pm. Winds may blow from the south or southwest at 10–15 km/h, potentially bringing a slight drop in daytime temperatures.

The capital recorded 28.3°C at 6am Thursday. The BMD said sunset in Dhaka will be at 6pm, while sunrise on Friday will be at 5:46am.
