A student of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has been accused of secretly photographing a female student on a university bus heading to Dhaka and subsequently harassing her physically. Fellow students detained the accused and handed him over to the university administration, where he reportedly gave a written confession.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, June 13, on a bus heading from the university campus to the capital's Bangabazar area.

The accused, Md Hasanur Rahman, is a student of the 50th batch of the Anthropology Department and a resident of Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah Hall . He is reportedly the general secretary of the unit's 'Cricket for All' organisation.

According to witnesses and the complainant, a female student from the Philosophy Department boarded the university bus for Dhaka to go to a tuition session. When the bus reached the Pakiza area in Savar, she discovered that Hasanur Rahman had been taking her photo without her consent. When confronted, the accused initially denied it and became argumentative.

The female student then took his mobile phone to confirm. The accused allegedly grabbed her hand and tried to snatch the phone back, causing her to fall from her seat.

Other students on the bus then detained and questioned him. The bus later returned to the campus, and both parties were taken to the university's security office.

Assistant Proctors Mohammad Abdur Razzak and Shamima Nasrin arrived at the scene. The complainant submitted a written complaint, and the accused reportedly provided a written confession.

Mahmudul Hasan Khan, a student of the 51st batch of the Geological Sciences Department and a witness, said the accused denied taking her photo but then claimed he was actually taking a picture of a male student sitting behind her. However, the photo clearly showed he had focused on the female student .

The complainant said, "I have submitted a written complaint to the administration. I will also file a general diary at the police station with the help of the administration."

Assistant Proctor Mohammad Abdur Razzak said the written statements from both sides would be submitted to the Vice-Chancellor, who would form a probe committee. Action will be taken based on the committee's report.

University administration sources said necessary administrative and disciplinary measures will be taken against the accused after the probe committee's report is received. They added that if anyone tries to protect the accused, strict action will also be taken against them .
