Students who failed one or two subjects to get another chance within a month
Students who failed one or two subjects in this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations will be allowed to retake the failed subjects within a month of the publication of the results.
A total of 422,905 candidates failed in one or two subjects this year.
The announcement was made by Mahdi Amin, Adviser to the Education Minister and the Prime Minister.
“On the instructions of the honourable Education Minister, we have decided, for the first time, to arrange re-examinations for students who fail in one or two subjects,” the Prime Minister's adviser said.
Under the existing system, students who fail one or more subjects in public examinations such as the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and HSC have to wait until the following year to retake the examinations. They are allowed to sit only the subjects they failed or, if they wish, all subjects again.
As a result, even those who fail in just one or two subjects have to wait nearly a year for another opportunity to improve their results.
The prolonged wait can delay students' academic progress and increase their psychological stress. The new initiative is expected to give those who fail in one or two subjects an earlier opportunity to retake the examinations and improve their results.
