Supreme Court Legal Aid Office provides 27,580 legal advice services
The Supreme Court Legal Aid Office has provided legal advice to 27,580 individuals over the past more than a decade. Additionally, more than 31,000 litigants have received direct legal assistance through this government service during the same period.
A report recently published on the National Legal Aid Organisation's website provided these figures. The report highlights various statistics of the national legal aid programme from 2009 to July 2026.
According to the report, the Supreme Court Legal Aid programme was formally launched on September 8, 2015. Since then, a total of 31,037 beneficiaries have received legal assistance up to July this year. During this period, direct legal assistance was provided in 3,457 cases through the Supreme Court Legal Aid.
Of these, 2,369 cases have already been disposed of. The remaining cases are at various stages of trial, according to the report.
The Supreme Court Legal Aid programme is being implemented by the National Legal Aid Organisation under the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. The primary objective of the programme is to provide government-funded legal assistance to financially insolvent, helpless and underprivileged individuals.
Under the 'Legal Aid Act', this system provides insolvent litigants with legal assistance, including lawyer consultations and case management. This government initiative has made access to justice easier for those who face difficulties in establishing their rights in court due to a lack of financial means.
