The newly established Supreme Court Secretariat will be inaugurated on Thursday. Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed will inaugurate the secretariat, Supreme Court spokesperson Md Shafiqul Islam said on Wednesday.
On November 30, an ordinance titled the Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance, 2025 was issued with the aim of ensuring full independence of the judiciary. The ordinance was issued by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs upon the directives of the president, officially separating the judiciary from executive control.
Earlier, on November 20, the advisory council of the interim government gave final approval to the draft of the ordinance establishing a separate secretariat for the Supreme Court.
To ensure institutional autonomy of the judiciary, the office of the chief justice sent a proposal on October 27, 2024, to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, seeking formation of an independent judicial secretariat. The proposal outlined necessary amendments to the Rules of Business and Allocation of Business, along with a draft ordinance, an organogram and implementation recommendations pursuant to Article 109 of the Constitution, which mandates proper supervision and control of subordinate courts and tribunals by the High Court Division.
