The Appellate Division’s Chamber Judge has extended the stay order on the High Court’s directive to suspend the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election until Wednesday. The full bench of the Appellate Division is scheduled to hear the case on Wednesday.

The stay order was issued on Tuesday following an application filed by Dhaka University authorities seeking to suspend the High Court’s earlier order. Mohammad Shishir Monir, the university’s legal counsel, appeared in court to represent the petition.

On Monday afternoon, the High Court had suspended the DUCSU election, originally scheduled for September 9, until October 30. However, the Chamber court later stayed that suspension on the same day.

The controversy stems from a writ petition filed on August 28 by BM Fahmida Alam, candidate for the Secretary of the Liberation War and Democratic Movement from the left-wing coalition panel ‘Aparajeyo 71’ and ‘Adommo 24’. She challenged the candidacy of SM Farhad in the upcoming election.

Meanwhile, several student organizations including Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shibir, Ganotantrik Chhatra Sangshad, and various leftist groups have already announced their respective panels. This year, around 10 panels—both full and partial—are contesting in the DUCSU election.

The verdict from the Supreme Court is expected to bring clarity to the future of the election.
