Sylhet airport security officer missing for 3 weeks, family questions GD discrepancy
Md Arifullah Jelin (26), an assistant security officer at Osmani International Airport, has been missing for nearly three weeks. A general diary (GD) was filed with the police station, but no trace of him has been found yet .
Jelin's home is in Shitalpur village, Haripur upazila, Thakurgaon. His mother, Farida Yasmin, held a press conference at a hotel in Sylhet on Saturday to demand his recovery. Family members said he has been missing since the afternoon of July 8.
At the press conference, she alleged that the details in the GD filed at the police station do not match what she knows about the incident. She demanded a thorough investigation .
Farida Yasmin said Md Arifullah Jelin went missing from a G-type quarter in the airport residential area of Khadimnagar Union under Sylhet's Airport Police Station on July 8. Despite searching all possible places, no trace of him has been found.
She said that before she and her family could reach Sylhet from Thakurgaon, Jelin's colleague and friend, Dhananjay Kundu, filed a GD (No. 427/2026) with Airport Police Station. The GD stated that Jelin had gone missing at some point between 3:45pm and 11pm on July 8. However, she had spoken to her son via video call until 5:30pm that day.
Farida Yasmin said, "My son was in the airport residential quarter when I spoke to him. The GD claims he disappeared between 3:45pm and 11pm. How can he be reported missing from 3:45pm when I spoke to him until 5:30pm? We still haven't received an answer to that question."
She also said, "This discrepancy raises suspicion that someone knows the real circumstances of my son's disappearance but is hiding it. I am demanding a thorough investigation into all the facts, especially the statements of those who were in contact with my son at that time, particularly the person who filed the GD, to uncover the real mystery."
In a written statement, Jelin's family said he had no known enemies in his personal life. However, they suspect he may have gone missing due to a dispute with a colleague or superior at work, or some other reason. They demanded a neutral and transparent investigation.
The family put forward five demands: immediate recovery of Md Arifullah Jelin, effective investigation and search operations, active cooperation from Osmani International Airport authorities, serious coverage of the matter in the national media, and uncovering the real mystery of the incident.
Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam said a GD has been filed in connection with the disappearance. Jelin's mobile phone was recovered from a shop in the Salutikor area of Sylhet, but its data has not yet been analysed . When asked about the time discrepancy in the GD, he said the matter had not come to his attention. He also said it had not yet been determined whether Jelin had any disputes with anyone, but that the investigation is ongoing .
