The government is set to remove Advocate Tajul Islam from his position as Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

Advocate Aminul Islam is likely to be appointed as his successor, a source at the Ministry of Law confirmed this to Views Bangladesh.

An official gazette notification may be issued as early as Monday or Tuesday regarding the matter.

Sources said Law Minister Mohammad Asaduzzaman summoned Tajul Islam to his office on Sunday afternoon, where he was informed of the government’s high-level interest in appointing a new Chief Prosecutor.

Aminul Islam previously served as a member of the defense team for former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in corruption cases filed against them.

At present, the ICT is prosecuting cases of crimes against humanity against Awami League politicians and members of law enforcement agencies over allegations of killings and injuries during the July 2024 movement, which ultimately led to the fall of the government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Additionally, the tribunal is handling enforced disappearance cases that allegedly occurred between 2009 and 2024. So far, verdicts have been delivered in three cases.

The International Crimes Tribunal was established in 2009 to prosecute individuals accused of war crimes.
