Tarique Rahman set to deliver first UNGA speech as prime minister

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to deliver his first address to the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday (September 24), outlining Bangladesh’s priorities on democracy, economic development, climate change, the Rohingya crisis and global cooperation.

Tarique Rahman will speak at the high-level General Debate of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York. In line with the government’s earlier announcement, he is expected to deliver his address in Bangla.

His speech is expected to focus on Bangladesh’s democratic renewal, rule of law and accountability, global peace and security, climate change and sustainable development. Youth and women’s empowerment, education and healthcare, equitable access to modern technology and reform of the multilateral system are also expected to feature prominently.

Economic diplomacy has been a major part of Tarique’s UN visit. On the sidelines of the General Assembly, he has held meetings with world leaders and senior officials of international organisations, including World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, with discussions covering Bangladesh’s development priorities, economic progress and areas for expanded cooperation.

The Rohingya crisis has also featured prominently in his engagements. Tarique has called for stronger international efforts to facilitate the safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar and has urged action to address the root causes of the prolonged crisis.

Climate change is another key issue on his agenda. At high-level discussions on climate action and a just transition, Bangladesh has highlighted the need for predictable climate finance, adaptation support, technology transfer, loss and damage measures and climate justice.

The prime minister has also been holding bilateral meetings on trade, investment and economic cooperation. He has met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, while talks with leaders and representatives from Kuwait, Croatia, Bhutan, Thailand, Pakistan and Haiti are also part of his UNGA engagements.

Tarique’s address will also mark his emergence as the third member of his family to speak at the UN General Assembly. His father, former president Ziaur Rahman, addressed a special session of the General Assembly in August 1980, while his mother, former prime minister Khaleda Zia, addressed the assembly on multiple occasions, beginning in 1993.

The speech comes as Bangladesh seeks to present its priorities and deepen diplomatic and economic engagement with the international community during the 81st UN General Assembly.
