BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman will formally begin election campaigning on January 22 ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.

According to party tradition, the BNP chief usually launches election campaigns from Sylhet, and Tarique Rahman is also set to start his campaign from there.

Party sources said the campaign will begin with visits to the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal, Rah, and Hazrat Shah Paran, Rah, in Sylhet.

After spending 17 years in exile in the United Kingdom, Tarique Rahman returned to the country with his family on December 25. Just days after his return, his mother and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia passed away on December 30. Ten days later, on Saturday night, he was announced as the party’s chairperson at a BNP standing committee meeting.

In the 13th National Parliamentary Election, Tarique Rahman is contesting from Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17 constituencies.

Speaking at a greeting exchange programme with media editors at a Dhaka hotel on Saturday, Tarique Rahman said, “An election is ahead and I am a member of a political party. Naturally, from the 22nd, we will go before the people with all our plans.”
