Tarique Rahman’s 19th jail-free day to be observed today

The 19th 'Jail-Free Day' of BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will be observed today (September 3), with the party recalling the period as one of the most difficult chapters of his political life.

Tarique Rahman was released on bail on September 3, 2008, after spending around 18 months in detention during the military-backed caretaker government that took power following the political upheaval of January 11, 2007.

He was arrested on March 7, 2007, amid a sweeping crackdown on political leaders and activists during the state of emergency. He remained in detention as a number of cases were filed against him before eventually securing bail and being released.

Eight days after his release, on September 11, 2008, Tarique left Bangladesh for London with permission from the then caretaker government for medical treatment. He travelled to the United Kingdom with his wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, and their only daughter, Zaima Rahman.

His arrival in London marked the beginning of his prolonged stay in the United Kingdom. He has since continued his political activities from abroad and remains a central figure in BNP politics.

As the anniversary is observed, BNP leaders and supporters have revisited Tarique’s detention, alleging that he was subjected to severe physical and mental torture while in custody.

The party has described his release as a significant moment in his political journey and continues to observe September 3 each year as his “Jail-Free Day.”
