Tarique Rahman’s public programme schedule today
BNP acting chairman Tareque Rahman is scheduled to visit the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar today to pay tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War, party sources said.
Tarique Rahman, who returned to Bangladesh on Thursday after 17 years, will visit the memorial after Jummah prayers on Friday.
Ahead of the programme, security has been tightened in and around the memorial, with authorities deploying a four-tier security system. BNP leaders and activists in the Savar–Ashulia area have also completed preparations for the visit.
According to BNP leaders, Rahman will begin today’s schedule by visiting Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka to offer prayers at the grave of party founder and former president Ziaur Rahman. He will then proceed to Savar to place wreaths at the National Martyrs’ Memorial.
Rahman’s three-day itinerary was announced earlier by BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed at a press conference held at the party chairperson’s political office in Gulshan. Party leaders said the programme was finalised prior to his return.
On Saturday, Rahman is scheduled to complete formalities related to his National Identity Card and voter registration. Party sources said it is yet to be confirmed whether he will personally appear at the Election Commission office in Agargaon.
Later the same day, Rahman will visit the grave of Shaheed Osman Hadi at Dhaka University and then go to the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Shyamoli to meet people injured in the July mass uprising.
Officials said security arrangements remain in place throughout the programme. “Police are working to ensure overall safety ahead of Tareque Rahman’s visit,” said Mohammad Anwar Khan Anu, sub-assistant engineer of the Public Works Department at the National Martyrs’ Memorial.
Dhaka District Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic, Crime and Ops) Arafatul Islam confirmed that security has been reinforced in and around the memorial area, describing the measures as “multi-layered and comprehensive.”
