Prime Minister Tarque Rahman and Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister (PM) Olzhas Bektenov held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum’s Summer Davos meeting in Dalian, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening relations and expanding cooperation across a range of strategic sectors.

The meeting took place on Wednesday at the Dalian International Conference Center, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

During the discussions, Tarque Rahman emphasized the importance of elevating Bangladesh-Kazakhstan relations through stronger political engagement, deeper business ties and enhanced people-to-people connectivity. He also underscored the need for regular bilateral consultations to maintain momentum in cooperation between the two countries.

Both leaders agreed on the importance of establishing permanent diplomatic missions in Dhaka and Astana, a move expected to facilitate closer coordination and broaden avenues for engagement.

A significant portion of the talks focused on economic cooperation. The two sides explored opportunities for collaboration in skilled workforce mobility, renewable energy, digital infrastructure, technology, agribusiness and food processing industries. Prime Minister Bektenov expressed optimism about expanding trade and investment partnerships in these sectors, highlighting the untapped potential between the two economies.

The meeting also touched on regional and global issues. Kazakhstan sought Bangladesh’s support for its proposal to establish a specialized United Nations agency dedicated to water diplomacy and transboundary water cooperation. Responding positively, Prime Minister Tarque Rahman assured Kazakhstan of Bangladesh’s support for the initiative.

Officials described the meeting as another step toward strengthening ties between South Asia and Central Asia at a time when both countries are seeking new economic partnerships and greater regional connectivity.

Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman were also present during the talks.
