Teacher injured from 'sound grenade' effect dies

Fatima Akhter, a teacher who fell ill when police threw sound grenades during a protest march of teachers, has died.

She died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital today (November 16).

Khairun Nahar Lipi, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Primary Teachers' Association (Shahin-Lipi), confirmed the matter.

She alleged that Fatema Akhter died today after being admitted to the hospital as she fell ill when police threw sound grenade on a protest march of teachers to meet a three-point demand including raising pay to the 10th grade in the capital on November 8.

Fatema Akhter is an assistant teacher at No. 5 Jhinaiya Government Primary School in Matlab North of Chandpur and the wife of DM Soleiman, a resident of the same area.

Leaders of the teachers' organization have expressed grief over Fatema Akhter's death. Mohammad Shamsuddin Masud, convener of the Primary Teachers' Demand Implementation Council and president of the Primary School Assistant Teachers' Association, wrote in a Facebook post, "We have lost a brave fighter of the 10th grade movement."
